Painting Your Ceiling
While it might not be at the top of your mind when it comes to refreshing the look of a space in your home, painting your ceiling can make a big impact. Ceilings can become surprisingly dirty as people live in the space, especially in kitchens, and is often an afterthought when people decide to add new colors to a room. Whether you're looking to brighten up a dark space or add a pop of color, painting your ceiling is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend.
What you will need:
-
Painters tape
-
Angle brush
-
Roller frame
-
Roller cover
-
Extension pole
-
Drop cloth
Prepare the Room
Before beginning, use drop cloths to protect your furniture and floor. Move large pieces such as couches and recliners to the middle of the room and cover with a drop cloth. Remove any ceiling fixtures and decorations. Give your ceiling a thorough cleaning with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. You might be surprised how much gets collected in the texture of the ceiling. Look closely for holes or cracks. Repair any damage or fill holes that are in the surface with a spackling compound and let it dry completely. Once dry, smooth out the spackling with sandpaper until it's even with the rest of the ceiling. Next you will want to protect your walls and trim by taping them off. With your painter's tape pressed firmly to the wall to prevent paint from bleeding through you will also get a nice crisp line around the corners from the walls to the ceiling.
Choose the Right Paint
Choosing the right paint is crucial. Paints with a heavier body will be less runny and drippy, making it much easier to roll or brush without too much spatter. A flat finish is recommended as it provides an even look, minimizing the visibility of surface imperfections. Miller Paint's Premium Interior or Evolution Matte is an excellent choice for this application.
Painting
Start by using a brush to carefully paint along the edges and corners, feathering out the edge toward the middle of the ceiling. To paint the rest of the ceiling, use a roller frame with a pole attached. Work in small sections, and do not over-roll. Ceiling textures can vary, so be sure to select a roller nap size that is appropriate for the surface. Your local Miller Paint store can assist with your selection. Two coats are recommended, especially on highly textured ceilings. Painting each coat in opposite directions helps ensure adequate coverage for high texture.
Add Color?
If you want to add some color to your ceiling to get away from the same old white ceilings, we recommend picking a color that is either a striking contrast to the wall color or continuing the same color as your walls. If you want to break the monotony of plain white ceilings and add a vibrant look to your room, consider painting your ceiling in bold and contrasting colors. This approach creates a striking visual impact, drawing the eye upward and making the room feel more dynamic and energetic. Choose a color that complements or contrasts your wall color for a cohesive yet eye-catching effect.
Alternatively, you might prefer to create a seamless and harmonious look by painting your ceiling the same color as your walls. This approach can make your room feel more spacious and cohesive, especially if you have a smaller or low-ceilinged space.
