One Color Styled Three Ways by Polka Dot Interiors
Unexpected yet versatile, Desireé | 1219 — our 2022 Color of the Year — is a light orchid hue with touches of pink and gray. Suitable for many architectural styles, this color shifts and sways depending on what furniture and artwork it is paired with. We teamed up with Portland-based Polka Dot Interiors owner Marta Burlinska to showcase how to style one color three very different ways
Vintage Modern
Shag rug. Check. Record player. Check. Mid Century lounge chair. Check. Marta combined vintage finds with a contrasting black and white color scheme and a touch of muted chartreuse for a cohesive yet colorful aesthetic against the Desireé | 1219 background. The grayish undertones in the wall color are pulled forward in this set up, making the environment sophisticated and subdued. According to Marta, “Used pieces bring soul to interiors. Don’t be afraid to bring thrift shop finds or antique store gems into your space. They help to tell a rich story and make your space uniquely your own.”

Colorful Boho
Layers of pattern and color make this set up casually cool. Mustard yellow accents in the rug and throw are confident complements to the dusty orchid Desireé | 1219 walls. Textures take center stage in the custom upholstered chair by Portland’s Revive Upholstery and Design juxtaposed with an embroidered floral pillow and composite wooden end table. “Expression is the name of the game in creating a boho aesthetic. There are no hard and fast rules that need to be followed, just surround yourself with eclectic items, artifacts, and pieces that bring you joy. In this vignette, we put color forward with a mix and match of lavender, olive, mustard, and blush in textiles and art.”

Traditional Rustic
Traditional pieces mixed with an element of the outdoors make this vignette comfortable yet classic. When paired with creamy hues like warm white, gray, and beige, the saturated softness of Desireé | 1219 becomes a neutral itself. Marta says “the beauty of Desireé is that is slips easily into interiors, without locking you into a specific architectural style. It transitions seamlessly from a more formal set up to one of whimsy and play.“
